Travels
Details of the spa town

Zheleznovodsk is one of the most visited resort towns in the North Caucasus. It occupies a fairly small area and is home to only about 25,000 people. But this does not prevent it from being one of the most environmentally friendly and actively developing resorts of the Caucasian Mineral Waters {KMV}. It is always visited by a large number of tourists from our country and from around the world who want to improve their health.
The main asset of Zheleznovodsk is its healing mineral waters. Most of them are located in the area of Mount Zheleznaya. Here is one of the largest spa parks of natural origin. In the Kurortny Park there are drinking pump rooms of the most popular operating sources of mineral water – Lermontovsky, Smirnovsky, Slavyanovsky, Vladimirovsky and Well No. 56 (pump room-book – water is similar in composition to Essentuki No. 4).In addition to natural attractions in Zheleznovodsk, there are also many creations of human hands. These are monuments, historical buildings, temples. Many of them are also located in the Kurortny Park – this is the Pushkin Gallery, the Palace of the Emir of Bukhara, the building of the Ostrov baths and many others.

Zheleznovodsk – the pearl of CMW

Zheleznovodsk

Zheleznovodsk is a small resort town in the Stavropol Territory. It is part of the resort region of the Caucasian Mineral Waters. Its total area is 93.13 km2, and the population is about 25 thousand people.. Zheleznovodsk is located on the Stavropol Upland (in the foothills of the Caucasian ridge) and at an altitude of more than 500 meters above sea level. In 2003 Zheleznovodsk received the title of “The Best City of Russia” among small towns.
Zheleznovodsk is geographically located in the very center of the Caucasian Mineral Waters. It is located at a distance of 13 km from Mineralnye Vody, 12 km from Pyatigorsk, 16 km from Essentuki, 35 km from Kislovodsk and 191 km from Stavropol.

A bit of history

Zheleznovodsk

Zheleznovodsk was founded in 1810. Russian scientist and Kabardian prince Izmail-Bey discovered two thermal springs near Zheleznaya Gora. This place immediately became popular, patients from different regions began to come to the sources. True, at that time there was no city here yet – there were only huts, and the place for treatment was simply fenced off with a wicker fence. Later, General Alexei Petrovich Ermolov created a special commission, which began to build a resort town. Closer to the middle of the 19th century, 40 families of retired military moved to Zhelezny Vody, who founded the settlement. This settlement became a Cossack village, and in 1856 the springs were studied by the chairman of the commission for the study of the region of the Caucasian Mineral Waters Fedor Alexandrovich Batalin, and 23 more mineral springs were discovered.
Since 1861, N.A.Novoselsky began to promote the hospital. By the beginning of the 20th century, water, electricity and a railway were already installed here. The village park was equipped, modern buildings, including hotels, were erected. For the most rapid development of the resort, some local doctors created a hospital at their homes. The first official sanatorium of Zheleznovodsk was opened in 1911. The wounded and sick were treated here during the First World War and the Great Patriotic War. The settlement received the status of a city in 1917. Now Zheleznovodsk is part of one of the largest Russian resort areas.

How to get to Zheleznovodsk

You can get to Zheleznovodsk by plane, train, bus or by your own car. Aircraft fly to the nearest airport to the resort in Mineralnye Vody. Next, by taxi, you can quickly get to Zheleznovodsk. The only advice is not to use the services of private carriers, because often their services will cost you an order of magnitude higher in cost. You should choose from a number of official taxi aggregators.Fortunately, there are a lot of them nowadays. And finding them using a cell phone or the Internet is not difficult. If you choose the railway, then the Mineralnye Vody station will be the closest. Then you have a choice: the fastest, most comfortable way of delivery is a taxi. Or more economical – fixed-route taxis that run to Zheleznovodsk every 15-30 minutes.

About the weather

Zheleznovodsk

Basically, there is a moderately dry and mountain-forest climate. A huge number of trees that grow on the slopes of Mount Zheleznaya keep the air in a perfectly clean state and abundantly saturate it with oxygen. You will feel this as soon as you enter the territory of the spa park. Well, for the absence of any industrial enterprises within the city, Zheleznovodsk is often compared to the mountain Alps and is jokingly called Little Switzerland. Another unusual fact is that with about three hundred sunny days a year in its arsenal, Zheleznovodsk is considered the record holder for the number of foggy days. Most of the fog here descends from Mount Zheleznaya and occurs in the morning hours.
You can feel very comfortable here all year round. Mild winters with high enough temperatures (snow in these places does not heal for more than three or five days) will delight you with the sun and thaws, and warm summers and fresh mountain air will help to endure the southern heat more easily. The atmospheric pressure here is surprisingly constant and low compared to other cities in Russia. It is kept in the range from 701 to 705 mm Hg. This is what makes those people who have high blood pressure or people who suffer from cardiovascular insufficiency feel very comfortable. Full autumn begins in Zheleznovodsk in the second half of October. As a result, the city will sparkle with new colors. The eternal green color takes on shades of yellow, red and other colors. Many beautiful photographs can also be easily taken.

About transport

Zheleznovodsk is a small town, from end to end it can be walked around in an hour and a half, but even here there are several fixed-route taxis that run both around the city and capture nearby towns and villages (railway station Beshtau, Inozemtsevo, Pyatigorsk, Mineralnye water, Essentuki and Kislovodsk). At the request of the city’s residents, most of the routes were laid out so that it was possible to duplicate and take as many passengers as possible from different parts of the city. In total, with suburban buses, there will be no more than a dozen routes. City ticket price – 18 RUB. The ticket price to Pyatigorsk is about 45 rubles.
In good weather, you can ride bicycles or electric scooters. There are several bike rental points in the city. Services are provided by some hotels or active recreation centers. An hour of renting a bike costs 200 RUB, and renting it for the whole day will cost about 800 RUB. On request, it is possible to rent child seats or bicycles for children. A flashlight, tools, a backpack, a lock and, most importantly, a map with a bunch of independent routes in the vicinity of the resort can be given out for a bike for free. Electric scooters now, however, as in any other city in the country, can be found anywhere (in the area of shopping centers, bazaars or in a resort park). Payment for their use can be paid immediately at the place with a bank card.

Car rent

Zheleznovodsk

You may need your car here in two cases. This is your long vacation, and the slow walks in the nearby places have already become boring. And the second – if you have a short vacation, and you want to see everything at once. If you only have 3-5 days in stock and do not have an unbridled craving for auto travel, then it is better to abandon the idea of renting a car and enjoy the quiet streets of Zheleznovodsk, its clean air and healing mineral water. Moreover, I will say right away – this pleasure {car rental} is not cheap. If you come here to be treated, then it is better and more useful to spend money on restoring your health, and not on road trips and car rental.
The main street of the city is Lenin Street. It is quite wide and finding a parking space on it is not a big problem. On the narrow streets of the city it will be more difficult to leave the car on the side of the road, but there is always a place near a more or less large store, and small paid parking lots are occasionally found. In addition, a number of hotels and sanatoriums offer their clients parking spaces for private cars.
The cost of renting a car from local aggregators ranges from 1500-2000 RUB per day for an economy class car, to more spacious premium cars – 3500-4500 RUB, As a deposit, they ask from 4000 to 15000 RUB. Delivery of the car, installation of the navigator, child seats are paid in most cases. From June to September, some aggregators increase tariffs – after all, it is the holiday season.

Treatment in Zheleznovodsk

Zheleznovodsk

Sanatoriums and health resorts of Zheleznovodsk specialize in the treatment of diseases of the respiratory system, musculoskeletal system, digestion and gastrointestinal tract, endocrine, nervous and cardiovascular systems; problems of the male and female genitourinary system and many other diseases.
The main feature of the local mineral waters is the content of iron and other mineral salts. Among the hot and warm natural springs, the Slavyanovsky, Smirnovsky and Lermontovsky springs are the most famous and useful. In addition to sulfate and calcium-sodium hydrocarbonate waters, sulfide silt mud from Lake Tambukan is used for treatment. And the local water and mud baths are considered one of the best not only in Russia, but also in Europe. She sees up to 1200 patients daily.
In addition, speleotherapy, acupuncture, various types of hydrotherapy using hydropathy, phytosalts, natural mineral, bischofite-pearl baths, inhalations, apparatus physiotherapy, radon therapy are practiced here – more than 20 types of various health procedures in total.
Currently, in order to receive full-fledged treatment in the city’s sanatoriums, do not forget to take your COVID-19 vaccination certificate with you. If you have not been vaccinated, then take a PCR test with you (not older than three days) or have a certificate of the presence of antibodies G. Otherwise, you may be refused treatment and may be denied spa treatment altogether. And they will require before settling in the sanatorium to pass the appropriate tests in the medical institutions of the city. For some reason, the sanatoriums do not really want to write about this. Please bear this in mind.

Where to stay in the city

Zheleznovodsk
источник: 2gis.ru

If you arrived or flew to Zheleznovodsk in a sanatorium or other health resort and you already have a voucher on hand, then you will not have any problems with overnight stay. But if you came here as a savage, then you will face the problem of where to live. The option of staying in a sanatorium may not work, especially during the holiday season. Because vacant seats will be unavailable or incredibly expensive. Therefore, you will have to look for housing from private owners.
For a room in an old hotel of Soviet times, they ask from 1200 to 1800 rubles. If you are lucky, you will get a room with an acceptable repair and even with the Internet. Apartments (or rental housing in comfortable apartments are estimated from 2000 to 3500 RUB per night. The further the apartment is located from the resort park and pump rooms, the cheaper the price. The cost of living in a sanatorium with meals per day varies from 2500 to 3500 rubles per person. this cost includes food and some inexpensive treatments (such as enemas and inhalations).

Where can you go with your child

Zheleznovodsk

Basically, Zheleznovodsk, being a resort city, is of course designed for treatment, not entertainment. Therefore, young children who do not have any serious chronic diseases will not be particularly interested in spending time there. However, in the area of the resort lake there are children’s entertainment areas and trampolines, children’s water slides, volleyball and basketball courts and a large area with modern exercise equipment. All this is in the open air. The water park of the entertainment complex “City of the Sun”, located in the village of Inozemtsevo, is 12 km towards Pyatigorsk. It operates during the summer and has 9 swimming pools and 12 attractions. There is a good Circus in Kislovodsk, which can also be visited with children.
If, nevertheless, sanatorium-resort treatment is shown to your children, then for this there are several specialized children’s sanatoriums in the city.
  – Children’s sanatorium “named after N.K. Krupskaya”
  – Sanatorium “Narzan Valley”
  – Children’s sanatorium “Salute”

Where can you eat in Zheleznovodsk

In Zheleznovodsk, there are about twenty restaurants, pastry shops, pizzerias, cafes and kebabs. I do not count canteens at sanatoriums and other medical institutions. Among other things in the market, and in almost every small grocery store, you can buy excellent homemade products. These are dairy products, baked goods, homemade salads and much more. Everything is very tasty and affordable. So you will definitely not stay hungry. Moreover, the use of mineral water helps to improve digestion. ))) So no heartburn and heaviness in the stomach will definitely be attached to you .. Prices in canteens here range from 200-300 rubles per person in the city, to 1000-1500 in a cafe in the resort area. A portion of barbecue in a barbecue will cost you from 300 to 400 rubles apiece. I will say that the portions here are quite large and the meat is always free of fat.

What can you bring home from here

Zheleznovodsk

Of course, you can bring real mineral water as a useful and delicious gift. Although they say that there is no point in taking it from the drinking pump room, as it loses its healing properties. But I will tell you that this is not entirely true.
If you fly by plane from your home to your home and your journey takes no more than 4-6 hours, then you can bring a normal mineral water in a plastic bottle, provided that the bottle is clean, the water is poured from the pump room to the very top (with minimal air in the bottle) and the plug is tightly screwed on. As a result, at home this water can be heated in a warm water bath up to 40 degrees and with great pleasure you can drink it or treat your relatives or friends to it. You will not feel the difference from the water taken from the pump room. The only thing I can say is that if this water stays with you for several days, then minerals will precipitate. And it will turn yellow. If you previously opened the cork and drank it and closed it again (you started up the air and oxygen), then this period will come much earlier. Therefore, open water should be drunk first.
For those who travel by train or car and the journey to the house takes several days, the sale of this water, purified from many minerals that precipitate, is provided. Such water is additionally carbonated and poured into both plastic and glass bottles. Such water has a long shelf life, does not turn yellow over time, although it does not have all the properties of mineral water taken from the pump room. You can pick it up in a small store, which is on the way towards the resort lake from the Rafael sanatorium. Here you can buy Slavyanovskaya, Smirnovskaya and Lysogorskaya mineral water.
In pharmacies and shops, you can choose from an abundance of local beauty products, many useful gifts. These are creams, masks, soaps, shampoos, as well as candles and other medicines. All this is made from the healing mud of Lake Tambukan. For those who like to leave the memory of visiting the city for a lifetime, there are numerous markets and souvenir shops with local products.

Spa park

Zheleznovodsk

The spa park is of natural origin. Mainly oak, beech, hornbeam, chestnut prevail. It was formed spontaneously and unplanned. In 1825, paths to mineral springs were laid through this forest. At present, in the park, around Zheleznaya Mountain, numerous pedestrian terrainks (paths) lined with tiles have been built. The package contains lighting. Rest benches, etc. There are hiking trails to the Razvalka Mountain and to the top of the Zheleznaya Mountain.
There is an artificial lake at the bottom of the park. Fish and turtles live in the lake. Catching them is prohibited, as they are listed in the Red Book. Nearby there is a sanatorium named after the 30th anniversary of victory.

Smirnovsky source

Zheleznovodsk

Вin the center of the resort park, on the slope of Mount Zheleznaya, there is one of the most famous springs in the city – Smirnovsky. He came to the surface spontaneously. Previously, they called him Dirty. In 1866, the Russian balneologist Semyon Alekseevich Smirnov cleared the place of the key, digging out a small depression. At the bottom of the pit there were 15 holes from which thermal water and carbon dioxide escaped. After the conducted research, it became clear that this water can be used as medicinal drinking water (water temperature: from 38 to 40 degrees). In 1898, the source was named Smirnovsky, since then the name has not changed. After 30 years, Dr. Smirnov found 2 more springs with the same mineralization properties. In the distant past, this area was swampy and local residents took mud baths here. This is one of two sources of healing mineral water in Zheleznovodsk, discovered at the beginning of the 19th century, and along with the Slavyanovsk spring, became the founder of the resort.

Zheleznovodsk

The spring water is known for its medicinal properties throughout Russia and in the former USSR countries since the founding of the resort here in the pre-revolutionary period. Anyone can drink water here, no documents, payment, and sanitary certificates are required. But if you decide to self-medicate, or just visit the source for the sake of interest, keep in mind that you cannot drink a lot of Smirnov’s water, otherwise you will only harm yourself. Inside the pump room there is information on the stands on how and how much you need to drink it, and it is better to adhere to at least these recommendations.
In 1930, a gallery-shaped pump room with 9 columns was built over the mineral spring. Three springs with different temperatures emerge from the ground under the roof of the pavilion: 37, 40 and 51 degrees. Water belongs to the category of medicinal, which means that drinking it in unlimited quantities is harmful. Inside the pump room there are signs that indicate the norms of healing water for various diseases. The water of the Smirnov spring is used for diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and genitourinary system.

Working hours: daily from 07:30 to 09:30, from 11:30 to 14:30 and from 16:30 to 19:00; visits to the pump room are free.

Historical reference: Zheleznovodsk is the only place in Russia and Europe where calcium springs are heated to 40 ° C and higher. The dormant volcano under Mount Zheleznaya consists of calcium rocks. Magmatic layers burst outward and formed an almost vertical crack. Through it, the liquid, heated by magma and saturated with carbon dioxide, rises upward.

Slavyanovskiy source

Zheleznovodsk

In the center of the spa park there is a natural spring with the hottest mineral water – Slavyanovskiy. It got its name in honor of its discoverer – engineer and hydrologist Nikolai Nikolaevich Slavyanov. In 1916, a beautiful pavilion with a blue domed roof was built over it.
The water temperature is about 55-56 ° C, the taste is sour, easy to drink. The source is sulfate, sodium-potassium, contains magnesium, calcium, hydrocarbonates, radon. Water has a positive effect on the human body, helps with allergies, and can be used for prophylactic purposes. Belongs to the category of table water. Currently, two wells are in operation: No. 116 and No. 69.
Working hours:
daily from 07:30 to 09:30, from 11:30 to 14:30 and from 16:30 to 19:00; visits to the pump room are free.

Lermontovsky source

Zheleznovodsk

Lermontovsky source can rightfully be considered source number 1. Because it was opened by the very first (in 1810). Architect A.I.Kuznetsov in 1916 built a pump-room in the form of a semi-rotunda on this place. The Lermontov spring got its name in 1964, because the great Russian poet M.Yu. Lermontov. In 1975, mineral water was supplied to the pump-room from spring No. 69.
The water of the Lermontov spring is indicated for use in the following diseases: diseases of the digestive system (gastritis with reduced secretory function, with preserved and increased secretion, gastroduodenitis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer; non-infectious colitis, enteritis.

Working hours:
daily from 07:30 to 09:30, from 11:30 to 14:30 and from 16:30 to 19:00; visits to the pump room are free.

Cascade staircase

Zheleznovodsk

The famous staircase starts near the Smirnov pump-room and goes down to the resort lake, located near the sanatorium named after the 30th anniversary of victory. Sculptures, pools and fountains are placed along the entire staircase, from which water runs down the steps, creating cascades. The project of the so-called Cascade was developed by the architect N.A.Papkov and built in 1935. Previously, water from a mineral spring descended along this staircase. The entire length of the staircase is decorated with unusual fountains. The decoration here are sculptures in the form of characters from Russian folk tales (Mistress of the Copper Mountain, Danila the Master, Nymph, frogs, etc.). Now the entire architecture of the staircase has been preserved, except for the cascading thermal water. Along the stairs, there are alleys with benches, lanterns and flower beds.
Initially, the length of the staircase was only 200 meters, but not so long ago, an additional 700-meter section was completed, making the Zheleznovodsk cascade staircase the longest in the southern part of Russia.
In the middle of the ascent in 2019, a pump room-book was opened, in which you can not only drink healthy mineral water, but also join the classics, because on its walls excerpts from Lermontov’s works are reflected. This pump room glows very beautifully in the evening and at night.
From the top of the cascading staircase, a magnificent view of the surroundings opens up: forests, a lake, mountains, neighboring villages, etc.

Palace of the Emir of Bukhara

Zheleznovodsk

The palace of the Emir of Bukhara was built in 1912 for the Russian general and emir Seyid Abdullah Khan. He combined the neo-Moorish style and eclecticism and elements of modernity. The next year, it was given as a gift to Empress Maria Feodorovna and mineral baths were opened in it. In 2017, the palace was given for restoration by a company planning to open a hotel there by the end of 2021.
In order to get to the former residence of the emir, you need to climb the stairs, the foot of which is guarded by two stone lions. The facade of the building is made up of a tower with a veranda and a minaret, the entrance is decorated in the form of an arch-portal. The walls are decorated with carvings depicting Uzbek ornaments.
The palace complex includes living quarters, many corridors, a minaret, stables and a harem tower. According to legend, the unfaithful wives of the emir were thrown from the tower of the harem. This low-rise building is also called the Tower of Death.
The palace is currently a federal property, so it is closed to the public. Previously, this building housed the medical building of the Telman sanatorium. Currently, by the end of 2021, it is planned to open a modern hotel complex.

Pushkin square

This square is named after the famous poet A.S. Pushkin, because there is a monument to the great Russian poet. He is depicted walking forward, leaning slightly, as if opposing the wind. The monument, 2.5 meters high, is made of quartz sand, cement, marble chips and rises on a granite pedestal. On memorable days in the park, literary meetings are held on the topic of the works of A.S. Pushkin. In 2017, speakers appeared next to the monument, and now, almost every hour, poems of the great poet are heard here, which are read by modern artists. The square combines both the combination of nature itself and the creations of human hands. The picturesque slopes of Mount Zheleznaya and age-old trees (mostly oak) are combined with paths and stairs lined with stone tiles.

Zheleznovodsk

The Pushkin Gallery is a building with several beautiful domes made of glass and metal structures. It was built in 1901 and at first was called quite simply – Iron. A total of two sets of these prefabricated forged steel structures were delivered. One was installed in Zheleznovodsk, and the other in Pyatigorsk. They were delivered by train from St. Petersburg, colored glasses were ordered in Warsaw, and builders from Vladikavkaz were engaged in the installation. The interior decoration was carried out by the artist from Novocherkassk I. Krylov. He also invented an eagle that holds a snake in its paws. It is still the symbol of the city of Zheleznovodsk. and Symbolizes the victory of healing mineral water over all diseases. Currently, it often hosts tours and performances by artists and singers, both local and those who come here for rest and treatment. Moreover, the cost of tickets is quite reasonable.

Musical gazebo

Zheleznovodsk

An old pavilion built at the end of the 19th century for performances by poets and musicians is installed in the Spa Park. It features blue and thin pillars that support an octagonal roof with carved cornices. There are beautiful wrought-iron railings below, which give this structure an austere and cozy look. This gazebo was named Musical because of its unique acoustic properties, which made it possible to clearly hear both the music and the voices of singers and poets from almost the entire territory of the park.
The gazebo has retained its properties, but today only casual visitors or local artists sing in it. And also photo shoots are often arranged in it – both in the gazebo itself and on the steep stone stairs leading to it.

The main attractions of the city

The main attractions of Zheleznovodsk are healing mineral springs and architectural structures of cultural and historical value. In general, the city of Zheleznovodsk itself can be called one big natural attraction. Everything that is here is associated with nature: forests, mineral springs, mountains, lakes, and so on.

Sculpture Zodiac Signs

Zheleznovodsk

This is one of the most beautiful and incomprehensible architectural structures in Zheleznovodsk. It appeared in 2000. Currently, there is a legend that this sculpture will bring you good luck and fulfill your every wish. To do this, you need to rotate a huge egg-shaped stone located in the middle of the sculpture around its axis. It will be enough just to move it from its place and scroll a little. I must say right away that it is possible to do this, but not entirely simple. Since the weight of the stone is about 1000 kg. Therefore, if it is rotated by two or more adults who are in good physical shape, then it is quite possible to do it. This composition has a very original design. On the side there are columns with images of the symbols of the year according to the Eastern calendar and twelve signs of the zodiac, on top there is an inscription with the name of the city and a sundial. The stone egg is decorated with figures of half-naked girls.

The stone that fell from the Iron Mountain

Zheleznovodsk

On the night of April 10-11 in 1892, a fragment of Mount Zheleznaya fell down and rolled down the side of the mountain into the Kurortny Park. The weight of this stone block is about 1700 poods (more than 27 tons). The reason for the fall of the stone was the blowing up of a part of the Zheleznaya mountain for laying terrenkurs, which had been carried out a few days before. Currently, only a small part of it is above the earth’s surface. Everything else is hidden deep underground. For some unknown reason, it was not used in the improvement of the resort park. Later, a commemorative plaque appeared on it and walking paths were added to it. It is located in the area of the Slavyanovskiy drinking pump-room.

Monument to the Fighters for Soviet Power

The monument was built in 1957 in the park, which is located in the area of Lenin Square. This monument is erected in memory of those who gave their lives during the Civil War. At the corners of the monument cannonballs are installed, in the center there is a stele 12 meters high. At the very top, a five-pointed star flaunts, which symbolizes the victory of the power of the workers and peasants.
There is a figure of a Red Army soldier in front of the monument. He took off his cap and lowered his head, pressing his right hand to his chest. This is a symbol of sorrow and eternal memory of those soldiers who lie in a mass grave under this monument.

Cave (grotto) permafrost

Zheleznovodsk
Источник: https://totrip.info

Not many tourists and visitors to the resort park can boast that they have been to this cave at least once in their life, because it is located almost 5 kilometers from the center of the resort park. You can get to it by terrain course # 2 and # 3. There are corresponding signs on the way. The permafrost grotto is located on the slope of Razvalka Mountain. They discovered it at the beginning of the last century. The grotto got its name due to the fact that at any time of the year the temperature in it does not exceed 0 ° С. The walls of this cave are composed of petrified magma with large cracks. Cold air comes in through them in winter. In summer, on the contrary, he goes out through them. It’s very beautiful inside. Real stalagmites and stalactites. I will not publish a photo on purpose so that you have a desire to visit it. The cave is of natural origin, artificially deepened in the form of an adit. To walk to the end of the cave (about 150 meters), do not forget to take a lantern with you.

Ostrovsky baths

Zheleznovodsk

Baths named after M. N. Ostrovsky is the name of the building of the former medical and recreational base. It was built in 1893. The building was built in the Moorish style. All its facades are painted in Arabic script. The beautiful red and white building of a hydropathic institution in the Arabian style was built in the late 19th century. Previously, the technical equipment of the building was at the highest level for that time. Each room was served personally with mud, hot and cold mineral water. This complex received its name in honor of the brother of the famous playwright, Minister of State Property Mikhail Ostrovsky, who was a supporter and founder of the development of the Caucasian Mineral Water Resources. The building is currently undergoing restoration and is closed to the public.

Museum of local lore

The local history museum is located near the Lermontov pump-room. Near it stands a small but beautiful old brown brick mansion. The museum has been operating here since 1988. It has several rooms that are dedicated to different historical periods. There is a hall dedicated to nature and paleontology, a hall dedicated to archeology, a hall dedicated to military topics, as well as a hall dedicated to historical figures who lived here, were treated or took part in the construction of the city of Zheleznovodsk. There are also very interesting exhibits in the courtyard of the museum. These are the remains of an old stone aqueduct, a bowl for collecting mineral salt, a sacrificial stone and much more. In one of the halls there is a collection of metal tools that were created at an iron-smelting enterprise located in the last century in the very center of Razvalka Mountain.

Train Station

The Zheleznovodsk railway station was built simultaneously with the Zheleznovodsk – Beshtau station in 1897. Its size is not very large, since the railway line to Zheleznovodsk is a dead end. At the moment, only two electric trains run on it a day to Kislovodsk. The building itself has historical value and is currently a protected architectural monument. The station platform, made in the old style, looks quite interesting. There are beautiful benches on the platform, which are illuminated by electric lanterns. There is a single-track railway to the station. At present, traffic on the section Beshtau station – Zheleznovodsk has been stopped. In the building of the railway station, only one wing of the building is used, in which the ticket offices of long-distance trains are located.

Mountains in the vicinity of the city

Mount Iron

The city of Zheleznovodsk is located at the foot of Mount Zheleznaya. The mountain got its name not at all because it consists of iron ore, but because of the large number of mineral springs with a high iron content, the salts of which are brown. By its composition, it can be attributed to a dormant volcano or mountain laccolith. Its height reaches 853 meters, and its diameter is more than two kilometers. At the base of Mount Zheleznaya, springs enriched with mineral salts still come out. Currently, 23 sources are known, 16 of which are now actively used. You can climb this mountain along a beautiful but not very attractive trail. Its route runs in a spiral around the mountain and begins in the resort park in the area of the fork to the terrain path No. 1 around the mountain and the descent to the Slavyanovskiy source. I will say that the way up will take you 40-45 minutes. Its length is about 3 km. There is nothing interesting at the top. Therefore, it’s up to you whether to go there or not. Currently, a project is being prepared for the construction of a cable car, which will connect to the top of the mountain with a resort lake – similar to the one done in Pyatigorsk.

Together with the mountains Tupa and Ostra, it enters the northwestern part of the foot of the Beshtau mountain. The mountain belongs to the remnant-magmatic (paleovolcanic) rock. The mountain is a rocky outcropping of beshtounits with a size of 500 × 150 m. The name comes from the yellow color of the rocks, in which there are holes that resemble a honeycomb. Since 1961 it has been classified as a natural monument. Several millennia ago, it was a real volcano. And about 5 thousand years ago, ancient people lived on the mountain. Not so long ago, modern archaeologists discovered the site of ancient human settlements of the Byzantine era.

Religious institutions of the city

Church of the Equal-to-the-Apostles Princess Olga

A beautiful church located on a high mountain in the center of the city was built in 1988 on the site of an old prayer house. Her project was based on a simplified copy of the Tsare-Konstantinovsky Church in the city of Suzdal. The church consists of a pillarless five-domed quadrangle with an altar, a narthex and a separate gate belfry. The construction of the church was built on donations from parishioners of the entire Stavropol and Baku diocese, which united Orthodox Christians of the Stavropol Territory, Azerbaijan, Dagestan, North Ossetia and Checheno-Ingushetia. The new temple got its name in the name of the Holy Equal-to-the-Apostles Grand Duchess Olga.

Church of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos

Previously, this three-story building was called New Baths and belonged to the medical institutions of Zheleznogorsk. The spacious and bright room of the temple is also unusual in that it is located on the second floor of the building. Because of this, there are no high ceilings and painted vaults, but this does not interfere with creating a feeling of comfort and tranquility here. There is a small bell tower at the entrance from Semashko Street. The first service for parishioners was held here in 1996. Today the building is crowned with two domes with crosses, a chapel with a mineral spring has been consecrated. Inside the temple there is a chapel of the great martyr Panteleimon and a consecrated mineral spring. There is a Sunday school, a baptismal church, a library. Church shops, a carpentry workshop and a library were opened.
